In December we had the pleasure of having our home featured on Style Me Pretty Living. I thought I would share some of the pictures taken by Velvet Leaf Photography of just the living room that were featured on their site, and eventually share all the photos of the kitchen, dining room and girls room. I have shared a home tour on the blog before, but everything in our home has pretty much changed since that first home tour lol so I thought I would share the updated version.
I loved our old living room but was wanting to go away from a “theme” room which ours used to be and have a more soft, romantic room, that I could fill with the things I loved. I wanted there to be lots of neutrals but also feel really cozy and warm so I made sure to use a mixture of neutrals like grey’s and creams with some warm wood tones in the lamp, railing, and banister. I also consider gold to be a neutral and added lots of accents on the shelves and mirror in gold and brass. It took me a while after moving the furniture around, and hanging the mirror and photos to realize what the room really needed was some open shelving. The great thing about open shelving is it gives you lots of space to play around with vignettes, and put up your more personal touches. Books, prints and candles were added to mine along with some quirky fun pieces like coral from Vancouver Island where my husband is from and a polka dot gold cookie jar, because… why not I say! It also gives you space to change and move around your items, nothing is permanently placed on my shelves except some gold stickers I have on the walls but even those can be peeled off.
I really have an eclectic style so I like to have lots of textures like faux fur rugs and blankets layered in my spaces along with fun patterned pillows to add colour, and personality to my rooms. Most of my large furniture is from Ikea, including the coffee table, side tables, couch, and loveseat. All 6 of the floating shelves are also from there. I am a firm believer that not everything has to be super expensive to look good! My tufted side chair is Homesense and my blue side table is thrifted. I also have a thing for faux succulents because they almost look as good as the real thing and they don’t die…. thats big for me!
I love my living room and all its charm, but as pretty as things look in pictures please keep in mind my coffee table is chipped, my couch has stains ALL OVER IT as do most of my pillow covers, and my rug once had an entire bottle of milk dumped on it so it had to be chemically cleaned and if you look closely you can totally tell lol ( also do not look to close at my banisters because they rarely get dusted). Things can be pretty but need to be liveable, if you buy a cream chair the chances that a stain will be noticeable on it are high, and you just have to live with that. I have two little girls, one is 4 the other is almost 3… we have a lot of messes in our house. I choose to buy inexpensive things that look nice at this stage of life, and one day when they are older I may replace them with a coffee table thats not Ikea or a new set of couches but until then I will see the beauty in the mess and be thankful!
